Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s take a look at how lucky we are this year to have so many “firsts” among the nominations:
-First Marvel film nominated for best picture
-First Netflix film nominated for best picture
-First time two foreign film directors nominated for best director since 1976
-First African American nominated for production design
-First indigenous Mexican actress nominated for best actress.
-Ruth E. Carter became the third African American woman nominated for the most Oscars, tied with Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis.
-Alfonso Cuaron became the first person nominated for both directing AND cinematography in the same year.
-Paul Schrader’s first Oscar nomination for his work.
-Spike Lee’s first nomination for director and best picture
-First time since 2009 that three movies nominated for best picture have grossed more than $200 million domestically (Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star is Born, Black Panther)
-First time since 2009 that a best pic nominee has grossed more than $700 million domestically. This year it’s Black Panther, then it was Avatar.
Point is: no matter how much the Oscars have tried to piss off its audience this year with no host, a “popular film” category, fewer performances, and fewer awards given (most of which they’ve reversed), this year has been, in my opinion, a step forward in the right direction, not to mention the most unpredictable awards race in recent memory. It has shed more light on LGBTQ characters and stories, and finally opened up toward the mainstream, somewhat proving the little relevancy it still has in the twentieth century.
Here are Era of Good Feeling’s Oscar predictions for this year:
